Export Ban Cools Cotton Prices in India

As the world continues to react to last month’s major decision by the Government of India to suspend the registration of cotton exports and shipments until further notice, sources within India say that the move has produced some immediate results.

The Cotton Corporation of India Ltd. (CCI), a governmental marketing organization, reports that the ban has already begun to achieve its goal of pulling down domestic cotton prices, particularly in Gujarat, the country’s largest cotton manufacturing state. In a news release, CCI stated that the domestic prices for the popular variety of Shankar-6 had declined about Rs 2,000 per candy — from Rs 29,000 per candy to Rs 27,000 — after the ban. Each candy weighs about 356 kilograms.

CCI also stated that after the ban, “domestic mills have preferred to observe a wait and watch policy” and that “domestic cotton prices in the coming week may continue to rule lower than the peak level.”

For its part, the Indian commerce ministry “has expressed its displeasure over the textile ministry’s ban on raw cotton exports, describing the action as being done ‘in haste and panic,’” according to a report on the website, Yahoo! India.

A high-ranking source in the commerce ministry told the website that “the textile ministry wants farmers to sell cotton for cheap. If you ban the export, the farmer has no choice — he has to sell it for cheap.” He also stated that “cotton growers in Gujarat and Maharashtra will suffer the most. Because the ministry has made growing cotton unprofitable for farmers and exporters, growers may sew other crops which would be less likely to endure government intervention.”

By 24th April, 2010, about 95% of Indian cotton crop has reached the ginneries / markets and only 5% is left with the farmers. Thus almost all the farmers have been benefitted by high cotton prices. Let the textile industry find soime breathing space otherwise if its custormers die how the block / mohallah shopkeeper can survive. In Pakistan, farmers did not get euqal to Indian farmers as Pakistan crop being earlier, cotton prices shot up mostly when cotton growers had almost delivered their seed-cotton to ginneries / maarkets at compartatively low rates. Pakistan government should also follow the measures / actions of Indian Government to save their value-added industries as the spinning industry has already earned record profits this serason.

as the gov. of india take a step to ban export cotton it is very negitavi step taken by gov. at present more then 75 % crpos is processed an rest lay with farmer or with ginner and this stap taken to support south india base spinning loby bucause the textile minister is from south who is owning spinning mills, this is not true that in india cotton production is less and country will run out of stock in month of jun or july ,as the bigest producer state is gujrat and it is run by BJPa second largest political party in india so it might be a political issue also,as cotton cor, of india clame that prises is gon down but it is not only bucause export ban but ginner dont have good quality cotton in his hand so what ever the govermant agecis say is falls

This is a very good decision take by Indian Govt. as it will lead to reductionn of garment prices and also remove the middle men and middle countries which import cotton from India ( suppose Pakistan or China or Bangladesh) and add their freight from cotton import upto their desired location (Ocean freight or land transport from India to Pakistan increases the cost by 40%, by 60% for Bangladesh and 10% for China) + import duties (which are as high as 60% in Pakistan) + higher labour costs than India and also very high tax rates (labour costs as per Pakistan Textile Committe is found to be as follows::Pakistan:8.1 Bangladesh: 3.3 China:0.8 India:0.5).All this results in high cost of clothes which customer has to bear even in such economic depression. India is the 2nd largest manufacturer of cotton and labour costs are cheaper in India as compared to Bangladesh and China, only that India is not well promoted and represented in Europe and Amercia, but ban on cotton exports will cause garments being maufactured in India at much cheaper costs. We are ourselves a Germany based garment manufacturer having factory in India and are greatly benefitting from our investments, and that is the reason many garment manufacturers from our country: Germany and Austria are moving their factories from Pakistan and Bangladesh to India.

The step Taken by governemnt for banned the cotton export is very good step. This step should be taken in the starting of season . But Der se ayee par durust aaye…..
Why Ginners are crying that descision is wrong because of fear of seeling cotton at lower price which they are having in stock, mainly in Gujarat.
I can not understand that why farmers are thinking that they will not get good cotton price ?? is there is only export is mean for rising price for benifit of farmers and not avoiding interst of industiries who use this raw material for manufacturing finish cloth and garment who are major part in employment generation and as well as contibute in export of Garment and finish cloth instead of raw material.

Now all textile industry will get cotton at justify price( not at cheap rate or very high price) which will make them competitive and they will be able to export fabric and Garment instead of raw material which is various step ahead then raw cotton so it generate huge emloyment also. As now garment and cloth , fabric price will be competitve in foreign market due to that our industry will get more and more orders of Finish fabric and garment and for that textile mills will start buying cotton regularly. and slowly slowly due to demand cotton price will also start increasing.

SO IT IS WIN WIN SITUATION AND GOOD DECISION FOR BAN OF COTTON EXPORT IF WE DONT SEE OUR PERSONAL INTEREST( Ginner’s interst- sell their stcok in hand at high price, Farmers Interst:- interst of getting very high price, Exporters Interst:- Their business, Politician- Their Vote bank.. Plz dont see your personal interst)

Yes… if the things is like that Indian govt.Ban raw cotton export long terms basis that is different .Other wise by blocking suddenly the International raw cotton buyer, it will be self destructive decession for furthure internation export market.Indian govt. taken decission about ban comperatively short time. Which fallen internation raw cotton importer from India in bad shape .The authority should consider / permit thoose contracts already registration complited / half done shipment to be continue .

Importer never depends on single country/ even should not … evenue will open surely but initial suffering is markable.

If indian govt. follow Ban / withdraw practice in season / off season … then International raw cotton buyer will fix the mind different way regarding indian cotton and other origin will take the market share …
