Exports, Production, and Investments: All Eyes on India

For the last six months, much of the cotton world’s attention has been focused on India, the world’s second-largest producer and consumer of cotton. A very public tug-of-war between cotton exporters and the domestic textile industry has resulted in a number of government interventions including export bans, the lifting of those bans, and the establishment of export quotas for both raw cotton as well as cotton yarn. The latest activities in India involve a new government focus on technical textiles, one industry body’s production estimate for 2010/11, and an easing of cotton yarn exports:
