ICAC Meeting Attendees to View Cotton Value Chain

Those planning to attend the 70th Plenary Meeting of the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) will get more than a classroom-style education in Argentina. They’ll have the unique opportunity to view the cotton value chain and links between research and production.

The Government of Argentina, in cooperation with the provincial government of Chaco, is arranging complimentary travel from Buenos Aires to the cities of Sáenz Peña and Resistencia on Friday, Sept. 9 and Saturday, Sept. 10. Return flights to Buenos Aires will be provided on Saturday morning September 10 and Sunday morning September 11.

According to ICAC, the activities in Sáenz Peña constitute an extension of the official agenda of the plenary meeting involving all plenary meeting participants (including official delegates, observers and accompanying persons). The activities on Saturday, Sept. 10 ending in Resistencia constitute a tour of the cotton value chain and are integral to the subject matter of the plenary meeting. All plenary meeting participants are encouraged to participate in the activities on both Friday and Saturday.

On Friday, Sept. 9, all registered participants in the plenary meeting will travel about 90 minutes to the north by chartered airplane to the city of Sáenz Peña to view the research station operated by the Instituto Nacional de Tecnologíaa Agropecuraria (INTA). There will be an exhibition of narrow row and no till cotton planting, machinery and supplies, and displays of local crafts.

Later in the day on Friday, participants will check in to hotels in Sáenz Peña (at own cost), and the Closing Plenary Session and the Closing Dinner will take place in the Hotel Atrium Gualok, an excellent hotel and spa owned by the Government of Chaco. (Gualok is the word for cotton in the language of indigenous people of the Chaco.)

On Saturday, September 10, complementary tours will be provided of a high-technology farm near Gral. San Martín, Chaco Province, a small-scale family farm in Colonia El Alba, Formosa Province, and a textile mill in Puerto Tirol. Travel will be by airplane and bus. Participants will end the day in the city of Resistencia, capital of the Chaco, where they will check in to hotels (own cost). A dinner and fashion show are planned for Saturday evening.

On both Saturday and Sunday mornings, return to Buenos Aires will be provided by complimentary air travel.
