Legacy Japanese Textile Making a Comeback

Kyodo News reports that the local fabrics industry in Kitakushu is in the process of introducing foreign markets to Kokuru-ori, a traditional cotton textile that was once widely used when the kimono was the standard dress in Japan. The fabric is described as “strong but soft, with vertical stripes of alternating color.” After having vanished for nearly eighty years, the fabric was revived by Noriko Tsuiki after she came across a small piece in an antique shop in 1984.
