Major Topics

Sustainability and issues related to the environment have become major topics across nearly all industries in recent years, including textiles and apparel. As brands and retailers formulate sustainable strategies, it is important that they receive factual information about the progress cotton has made in this area.

Because modern agriculturally grown cotton does have an excellent story to tell about its sustainability and related environmental footprint, a very important scientist was recently hired by our Agricultural Research division. Her name is Janet Reed, and she will be Cotton Incorporated’s direct link to the retail and manufacturing sectors, working to relate cotton’s true environmental record and accomplishments. With a Masters of Science in Plant Genetics and a career that includes work in the development of new procedures for creating cotton varieties with value-added traits, to product development within the regulatory arena, Janet has witnessed firsthand the impact of the green movement and the issues facing cotton from both a domestic and global perspective.
