Malawi Looks to China for Cotton Industry Investment

The Malawian Minister of Industry and Trade indicated that the country is hoping to attract Chinese investors to build textile mills to boost its export market, according to CRIEnglish.com.

Minister John Bande told the publication that the country’s government has invested “large sums of resources” into the cotton industry in an effort to provide more value. In addition, he said that the southern African country is open to attracting Chinese investors to increase agro processing and manufacturing.

China recently established a cotton growing and processing project in southern Malawi, according to CRIEnglish.com. Exports to China rose to $7.7 million, or 294 percent between 2009 and 2010.
