Nanofiber Market to Reach $4 Billion by 2020

With a boost in productivity and an enhancement of applications, the size of the nanofiber market will top $4 billion by the year 2020, according to Kial Gramley, vice president of marketing and business development at the Texas-based FibeRio Technology Corp.

Gramley introduced recent advancements in the Forcespinning nanofiber production at the 2011 Spring Materials Interest Group meeting of the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists on May 25th at Research Triangle Park in North Carolina.

FibeRio debuted a mechanical method of nanofiber production called Forcespinning last year. The process is aimed at productivity increases to enhance the scope of nanofiber applications in a wide array of products.

When asked about the productivity comparison with other existing methods of nanofiber production, Gramley said the centrifugal force method of FibeRio technology is at least one order of magnitude higher in productivity. Durability of the nanowebs is still a challenge, however, and the solution has yet to be found.

Last June, the Wellesley, Massachusetts-based BCC Research estimated the size of the current nanofiber market to be about $140 million.
