Olam, Dreyfuss in Preliminary Merger Talks

Olam International Ltd., the Singapore-based commodity trader, says it is in merger talks with Louis Dreyfus Commodities, the world’s largest cotton trader.

Allenberg Cotton Co., in Cordova, TN, is a member of the Louis Dreyfus Group. Olam is among the top three suppliers of cotton and other commodities.

In a statement, Olam said talks could produce “a possible business collaboration, which may take the form of, among others, a merger … ”

The two companies have cooperated before, with Louis Dreyfus agreeing in 2007 to sell its 20 percent in Australian-based Queensland Cotton to Olam.
