Tanzania’s Cotton Stakeholders Convene to Solve Industry Issues

Contract farming in Tanzania has caused the country’s cotton industry to resolve its loan repayment methods, Minister for Agriculture, Food Security and Cooperatives, Prof Jumanne Maghembe said in a recent news conference.

The minister met with Tanzania’s cotton stakeholders in an effort to resolve sector issues, mainly the failure of cotton buying firms to repay government input loans to enable them supply farmers, according to AllAfrica.com.

Prof Maghembe recommended the Tanzania Cotton Board continue to grant licenses to qualified companies. Recent estimates indicate that Tanzania’s cotton yields will grow by 10 percent as favorable weather drives a good season.
