Crop Progress: Big Improvement in Crop Condition for Cotton

The USDA Crop Progress report dated June 20 showed that planting for this year’s U.S. cotton crop is essentially finished. The report showed that 96% of the U.S. crop is now planted – up 6% from a week ago and 1% above the 5-year average for mid-June.

Squaring is now reported in 21% of the crop – up 8% in the past week. Three states – Arizona, Georgia and Missouri – are currently ahead of their respective 5-year averages for this date. Initial reports of boll set were also documented in Arizona, Georgia, Missouri, Texas and Virginia.

Crop condition numbers showed a big improvement this week, with 52% of the U.S. crop rated good/excellent, 42% fair, and only 6% rated poor/very poor.
