Crop Progress: Boll Set Continues to Increase

The USDA Crop Progress report for the week ending July 17 shows an overall 9 percentage point increase in boll set across the U.S. Cotton Belt in the past week.

The report shows boll set reported in 31% of the overall crop, putting it 4 percentage points ahead of the 5-year average for this week. Eleven states reported double digit increases, with 10 states currently ahead of their respective 5-year numbers.

Squaring is now reported in 74% of the U.S. crop – up 17 percentage points in the past week and 5 points ahead of the 5-year average. In all, 13 of the 15 cotton producing states are now ahead of average.

Not much change in crop condition with 38% of the crop rated good/excellent, 35% fair, and 27% poor/very poor. Conditions remain troublesome in Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas, with at least 30% of the crop classified poor/very poor in all three states.
