Crop Progress: Cotton Condition Slips as Harvest Picks Up

The 2022 U.S. cotton crop continues to wind its way to season’s end.

According to the USDA Crop Progress report for the week ending Oct. 2, open bolls can now be found in 77% of the U.S. crop – up 10 percentage points in the past week and 4 points ahead of the 5-year average for this date. Nine states are currently at or above their respective averages for open bolls.

Overall harvest is now reported on 22% of the U.S. acres – up 7 percentage points in the past week and 5 points ahead of the overall average. Largest harvesting increases come from Louisiana, California, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, and Virginia.

Crop condition numbers for the week show that 31% of the crop is rated good/excellent (unchanged from last week), 23% now rated fair, and 46% rated poor/very poor.
