Crop Progress: Cotton Reported Slightly Ahead of Schedule

Boll set numbers took a healthy jump in USDA’s Crop Progress report for the week ending Aug. 14. The report showed that bolls are now found in 80% of the U.S. cotton crop – up 11 percentage points in the past week and 2 points ahead of the 5-year average for the date. The biggest increases were seen in California, Missouri, Kansas, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Georgia.

Open bolls are now reported in 15% of the nation’s crop – up 6 percentage points and slightly ahead of the 5-year average. Louisiana, Arizona, Texas, and Kansas lead the way.

Crop condition remains evenly ranked. This week, 34% of the U.S. crop is rated good/excellent, 31% fair, and 35% poor/very poor.
