Crop Progress: Planting Shifts to Zoom Mode

What a difference a week of warm, open weather can make when it’s cotton planting time.

USDA’s Crop Progress report for the week ending May 15 shows that 37% of the U.S. cotton crop has now been planted – up 13 percentage points nationally in the past week and tracking right on the 5-year average for the date.

We can’t say we were surprised by the numbers.

In all, 10 of the 15 cotton-producing states registered double digit planting increases in the past week, led by Tennessee (up 36 percentage points), Kansas (up 30), Alabama (up 28), Missouri (up 27), and South Carolina (up 26). Ten states are currently running ahead of their respective 5-year averages.

For reference, the report shows 49% of U.S. corn planted, 30% of soybeans, 80% of rice, 26% of sorghum, and 47% of peanuts.
