Pakistan Production Downgraded to 12.6 Million Bales for 2011/12

Late last month, Pakistan’s Cotton Crop Assessment Committee announced that the country’s 2011/12 cotton production is expected to total 12.6 million bales (170 kg each), generated from a total cultivated area of about 3.2 million hectares.

While that production estimate is no higher than the one announced at the committee’s prior meeting on Dec. 20, 2011, at least it does not show a further drop from the earlier expectations of the 14 million bales Pakistan was expected to produce this season. The province of Punjab will once again be the top-producing region by far, with a production expectation of more than 10.1 million bales.

The Jan. 26 meeting was chaired by Pakistan’s federal textile minister and attended by major stakeholders including the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association, the Karachi Cotton Association and the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association.

While the general consensus was for the lowered production estimate of 12.6 million bales, it wasn’t unanimous. According to a report in Pakistan’s Business Recorder, the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association is holding to its expectations of a national crop of about 14 million bales.
