The U.S. Department of Agriculture said Monday a large majority of the nation’s cotton, corn, peanut, rice and wheat crops are in fair to excellent condition.

The cotton crop was listed Monday in a weekly crop report as 81 percent fair, good or excellent. Ninety percent of the corn crop was reportedly in fair to excellent shape. Ninety-one percent of the soybean acreage was said to be fair to excellent, as was 97 percent of the peanut crop, 92 percent of the rice crop, 92 percent of spring wheat, 95 percent of the barley crop and 76 percent of oats.

The figures were announced a week after Russia announced it would curtail grain exports through the end of the year, due to a prolonged drought.

U.S. grain futures surged last week on the announcement from Moscow. Expectations of high yields in the United States, however, will tend to mute price gains in U.S. markets.
