Dyna-Gro Stakes Its Claim for Future Growth

It was a year of big successes for Dyna-Gro cotton seed.

Despite the loss of significant cotton acres in West Texas not being planted, the company still had a strong 2023 in terms of sales and variety adoption. A lot of that can be attributed to strengthening its stake in the lower Southeast with DG 3799 B3XF.

It’s a full season variety that showed out well in university trials, as well as our internal trials,” says Ty Fowler, Cotton Product Manager for Dyna-Gro. “When you look at the weather in the Southeast this year with extreme heat followed by tropical storms/hurricane that moved through late in the year, the storm tolerance of DG 3799 B3XF and its ability to withstand stress have growers liking what they see in the field here at the back end of the year.

“It’s sort of like the old Timex — it takes a licking and keeps on ticking.”

Fowler acknowledges that Dyna-Gro hasn’t been a big market share player in the Georgia and South Alabama, and growers are easing in to adding varieties like DG 3799 B3XF, DG 3615 B3XF, and H959 B3XF (a Halo salt-tolerant variety).

For 2024, Fowler says that Dyna-Gro is happy with what they have in their cotton product line. The current B3XF varieties will remain part of the mix, but the company will also start moving quickly to incorporate ThryvOn Technology into their varieties.

“We did launch three ThryvOn products for limited sale in 2023, and we’re going to have more supply for 2024,” says Fowler. “We currently have a variety that will fit every geography, whether it be West Texas, the Southeast, the Delta, or the Upper Southeast. Growers need to take a look at them and see how they fit their operation. We’re encouraging them to start looking in that direction and start thinking about not just 2024, but also 2025 and 2026.”

Fowler believes adoption of the ThryvOn Technology is initially going to be more of a trait pull-through. But it definitely has to be in the right varieties. Dyna-Gro is currently working to bring a whole new class of varieties to the market based on the merits of how they perform, regardless of whether it’s a B3XF or B3TXF line.

“It won’t be the staid tried and true, but new germplasm,” says Fowler. “Up until this year, our breeding program has been a dual pipeline with our B3XG varieties in one trial and our B3TXF varieties in another. Looking at what we have between those two technologies, we’ll probably end up with two or three new varieties for 2024 that are top of the heap, and that’ll be the direction we go.”
