Dyna-Gro Starting to Realize Its Cotton Potential

Ty Fowler is no stranger to the cotton industry. As the new Cotton Product Manager for Dyna-Gro, he’s impressed with the direction is company is taking.

“2022 was a pretty good year for Dyna-Gro,” he says. “We saw growth in our business in the South Plains of West Texas and in the Southeast. The driver for us, especially in West Texas, is the germplasm that our breeders brought forward with larger seed and great seedling vigor without sacrificing anything in turn out.”

DG 3402 B3XF, an early-to-mid maturity variety, is leading the charge for Dyna-Gro in the West Texas area, based on steady growth for the variety and increased market share. The company also brought another early-to-mid variety, DG 3469 B3XF, into the region recently, and Fowler says it too is starting to gain interest from growers.

All Dyna-Gro varieties feature the latest B3XF technology – right in line with what other seed companies are bringing forward – as well as a few B2XF varieties that still perform well on low input dryland acres in West Texas.

“DG 3402 B3XF was in the market for a few years before we really had adequate supply to start filling growers’ needs,” explains Fowler. “It’s just getting its running legs under it now that growers have had more experience with the variety. DG 3469 B3XF is now in that early ramp up period as grower interest grows.”

DG 3402 B3XF is also showing some interest and growth across the upper Mid-South, and the company is evaluating its fit in that market.

Over in the Southeast, Fowler touts DG 3615 B3XF, a full season variety that has topped University of Georgia County Trials for two of the past three years.

“DG 3615 B3XF is one of those full season varieties with top end yield potential that also performs well in the Southern Delta and Coastal Texas,” he says. “The University of Georgia trials put Dyna-Gro in growers’ minds, and we’re gaining share by leaps and bounds for 3615.”

Dyna-Gro is moving a new full season variety – DG 3799 B3XF – into the Southeast market as well. The variety has been compared to the old standard Deltapine 555 in terms of maturity and performance, and is likely targeted to South Georgia, South Alabama, and the Florida Panhandle.

“The Central Georgia area is really where 3799 has taken hold,” says Fowler. “We’re starting to see it pop up as a more prominent player in Southwest Georgia on the heavily irrigated sandy ground and also over onto East Georgia dryland acres. Between 3615 and 3799, we feel we have a pretty good one-two punch for those areas.”

In the Mid-South, the focus is on DG 3535 B3XF in the Mississippi Hill Country up into West Tennessee – a medium maturity variety that Fowler describes as a “good solid utility infielder type that’s going to be a good steady performer.”

For the Mississippi Delta and South Arkansas, DG 3555 B3XF provides excellent fiber quality with bacterial blight resistance. “It doesn’t always look pretty,” says Fowler, “but when you put the picker in there, the cotton just appears.”

Looking ahead, Dyna-Gro is set to bring new varieties containing the ThryvOn insect technology to market as soon as all approvals for the trait are in place.

Dyna-Gro varieties are supported by Nutrien Ag Solutions retailers which offer growers agronomic support with the varieties, along with available chemistries and nutritionals.
