Preliminary 2016 Variety Trial Data Available in TN, NC
December 2, 2016 Preliminary data from 2016 on-farm and County Standard Trials (CSTs) in Tennessee and from on-farm trials in North Carolina is now available online from the University of Tennessee and North Carolina State University, respectively.
According to Tyson Raper, Tennessee Extension cotton and small grains specialist, the summarized preliminary data represents 13 CST locations and four large replicated trials established during the 2016 season.
“Slight differences in variety performance from the two different types of tests can largely be explained by differences in planting dates,” he explained. “While the CST planting dates ranged from late April to late May, most of the replicated trials were planted in a narrow window from late April to early May. Therefore, later maturing varieties performed slightly better in the large replicated trials.”

In North Carolina, the data is based on 17 trials across the state, said Guy Collins, NC State Extension cotton specialist.
“This on-farm program consists of the most widely adapted and best-fit varieties for North Carolina cotton growers as determined by our leading seed companies,” noted Collins. “It is always advised that variety decisions be based on multi-environment and multi-year replicated data in order to identify varieties with a high degree of stability (strong performance across a wide range of environmental conditions and years).
“As a standard practice, it is always wise for growers to choose several varieties and position those varieties in environments where they are likely to perform competitively,” he added. “It is also advised that growers observe data from both the on-farm program and NCSU Official Variety Trials which will be available very soon.
