Kichler Tabbed for ‘Resistance Fighter of the Year’

Jeremy Kichler

Syngenta has named Jeremy Kichler of Oglethorpe, GA, as one of two producers selected for the 2009 Resistance Fighters of the Year. Kichler exhibits exceptional leadership and advocates proactive management practices in the battle against glyphosate-resistant weeds.

Kichler, a University of Georgia Cooperative Extension agent in Macon County, GA, was a primary contributor to the identification of the first glyphosate-resistant population of Palmer pigweed ever confirmed. He has assisted with more than 100 replicated university trials, screening herbicides to develop an effective management program for growers.

“I think the Resistance Fighter of the Year Program is a great way to proactively communicate the importance of resistance management strategies to all growers,” said Kichler. “Not all growers can appreciate the magnitude of the problem because it hasn’t hit their area yet. My hope is that we can educate them and keep them from ever having to face the losses that come with herbicide-resistant weeds.

“My advice to growers who have yet to experience herbicide resistance is to use proactive management tactics so they will lessen the chance of getting resistance. With that thought in mind, growers should utilize multiple modes of action, use correct herbicide rates and be timely with their herbicide applications. Those will be the biggest things to combat resistance on their land.”

Kichler’s promotion of proactive glyphosate resistance management practices has led to growers across several counties using pre-emergence residual herbicides, such as Reflex, Prefix and Dual herbicides, in their weed management programs to help manage glyphosate-resistant Palmer pigweed.
