Lack of Pre Herbicide Activation Could Complicate Post Treatments

Recent dry weather and the rush to plant cotton are raising questions about managing weed control.

A lot of cotton has gone in the ground in a very short period of time. And that raises questions about managing weed control.

Larry Steckel, University of Tennessee Extension weed specialist, points out that the explosion in planting means that rains have stayed away. In many cases, fields have already gone from too wet to too dry, which could cause issues with pre-emergence herbicide activation. It could also mean that a lot of acres will need a post treatment at the same time.

In his UT Crops Blog, Steckel suggests that growers walk their fields soon to help prioritize which ones will need to be treated first.
