It’s that time in the cotton season when all of the focus shifts to harvesting and ginning. The bolls that are open are the bolls that will be picked. And crop condition no longer matters.
USDA recognizes that, too, as the Crop Progress report for the week ending November 3 focuses exclusively on cotton acres harvested. We anticipate that ginning numbers will soon be added to the report.
This week’s report shows that 53% of the U.S. crop has now been harvested – a 7% increase in the past week and still slightly ahead of the 5-year average for this date. Last week’s weather slowed harvest in most parts of the Cotton Belt, but all cotton producing states showed percentage increases ranging from 2% in Louisiana to 11% in Georgia.
In all, seven states are still running ahead of their respective 5-year averages.
