Although this year’s U.S. cotton crop has essentially caught up to its five-year averages for squaring and boll set, it continues to walk a fine line in terms of crop condition from week to week.
The August 5 USDA Crop Progress report shows small percentage shifts in crop condition, with 54% of the crop rated good/excellent (previously 61%), 33% rated fair (previously 28%) and 13% now rated poor/very poor (previously 11%).
Squaring percentages are now above or right at the five-year average for this date. Overall, squaring is reported in 95% of the U.S. crop, with 10 states on or above average – and the others only a few percentage points behind.
Boll set is now reported in 59% of the U.S. crop – a 14% jump in the past week, with seven states at or slightly above their five-year average.
