NCC Joins Other Groups in Asking for Port Labor Intervention

The National Cotton Council and a number of associations representing U.S. agriculture and forest products producers joined together in a letter asking President Obama to reach out to the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) to insist that they immediately restore West Coast ports to full operation while they continue negotiations.

The NCC earlier joined a broader coalition in requesting the President’s intervention.

The ILWU and PMA have been engaged in protracted labor contract negotiations that are now contributing to a number of problems at West Coast ports, including congestion, slowdowns and terminal closures.

The letter asked the President to consider using all tools available to the federal government to help resolve this situation, including a request that the President invoke the Taft-Hartley Act should a strike or lockout occur in order to keep exports moving and protect the U.S. economy.
