KBH Introduces “Cotton Spear” Round Module Handler

The KBH Corporation is manufacturing, marketing and selling the Cotton Spear, a round module handler developed by Senath, Missouri cotton growers who are long-time KBH customers. The implement is designed to handle the modules made by John Deere’s 7760 Cotton Picker.
“The Cotton Spear is less expensive, has lower maintenance, and is easier to operate for round module handling,” says Tim Tenhet, national sales and marketing manager for KBH Corporation. “It’s priced thousands of dollars less than other module handlers.
“This unique implement also has no moving parts and eliminates hydraulics, which means low maintenance. However, it can be used with a hydraulic top link to increase versatility. Additionally, the Cotton Spear is the fastest and easiest operated module handler available.”
The unit’s four spears that pierce the module are constructed of special heat-treated and tempered alloy steel. The spears’ arrangement, size and yield strength enable the unit to penetrate the cotton and carry the round module through tough field conditions. The removable spears ship and store easily during the off-season.
The Cotton Spear does not remove or deform any cotton in the module. There also is no chance of damaging the protective wrap since the unit does not touch the outside of the module. Handling the module from the inside also eliminates stalks being pinned against the module and being transported to the gin.
Simple Operation
Operating the Cotton Spear is easy. Just align the unit relatively straight with one of the module’s open cotton ends. Let the tractor hitch all the way down. Back the tractor at 1-3 mph until the spear frame bumps the module. Then lift the hitch. Since the Cotton Spear is designed to penetrate the bale when the tractor hitch is all the way down, the ground clearance is maximized when the module is lifted.
Staging the round module for module trucks to pick up is also a quick operation. Line up the module, slowly back up until the modules touch, pull forward 4-8 inches, drop the hitch all the way down and pull away. There is no resistance on the cotton spears when the tractor pulls away. The module does not roll as much with the Cotton Spear as with other handlers so there will be less time spent keeping the modules straight for truck pick up.
