Reid Reneges on Disaster Relief Agreement

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) reneged on an agreement he made with Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Blanch Lincoln (D-AR) to include a $1.5 billion agriculture disaster provision in the Jobs Bill, Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment Act (HIRE), being readied for floor consideration.

A disappointed Lincoln, who had worked closely with Senator Thad Cochran (R-MS) and other Senate Republicans to craft the disaster measure, said, “I hope the majority leader will reconsider. This bill was carefully crafted to achieve significant bipartisan support and contains several important measures to spur business growth and encourage new hires. Most Americans don’t honestly believe that a single political party has all the good ideas.”

Lincoln’s disaster package would have provided an estimated $1.1 billion in direct payment assistance to producers in counties declared “primary” disaster areas by USDA. Direct payments would have bridged the gap until 2009 Supplemental Revenue Assistance Program payments are issued this fall. It would have included $42 million to aid first handlers of cottonseed.

“Arkansas’ farm families, like many across the nation this year, have been devastated by weather-related disasters,” Lincoln said. “Heavy rains and flooding made last season’s harvest nearly impossible, and many producers are now unsure if they will be able to survive another year.” Lincoln, incredulous over Reid’s going back on his word, noted that agriculture is the backbone of Arkansas, providing over 270,000 jobs and contributing over $9 billion each year to its economy.

In addition to disaster relief, Lincoln had crafted an agreement with the Republican leadership to reduce the estate tax

I’m going to have to assume that Democrat Harry Reid doesn’t consider farming a job occupation or as a form of employment.

Sure do wish these politicians would come and work with some of us farmers for a growing season to really know the struggles we have. To put your heart and soul into a crop and then watch the weather take it all away. To produce a product and not be able to say “this is how much I want for it” but “how much will you give me?”

Funny how the leading Democrat can find billions for giveaway programs for non-workers but cannot find anything for aid of the tax-paying farmers who are the backbone of our economy.

Reid is not trustworthy. Neither is the White House. Few politicians understand agriculture. Think how you will vote this fall and in 2012. No one has the “risks” that we producers have. Consider the ag budget—better than 80% goes for food stamps, foreign distributions, research (some of questionable value), extension and public education, and things that help producers some, but do not help offset the low prices we get in the market making it ever harder to earn profits as our input costs continually climb. All we hear is “eliminate ag subsidies” of all kinds. Crop insurance doesn’t come close to covering variable cost. Disaster assistance does serve a need for all of us, especially when we experience more than one consecutive year of crop/livestock losses.

Mr. Reid’s action in this only underscores the fact that he is out of touch with the nation and the real world in general. I hope the measure will be passed soon so that farmers can farm this year. Without it, many of them can’t. Mr.Harry will likely have a change of heart when food costs begin to escalate – even in Nevada where perversion is their main crop.

Mr. Reid made a promise to us, we in turn have made the same promise to our employees, bankers, and creditors. Think that we can back out now like he has. It’s not just the farmer that is depending on this help. It is also the people that work on the farms and their families, the people that sell us goods and their families, the bankers that lend us operating money and their families — do I need to go on? It’s time for our politicians to look at what we contribute to the economy and step up to the plate. We give back to the economy everything that we get in one way or another! We need assistance today!

Since Harry Reid reneged on his commitment to Blanche Lincoln, then her constituents need to push her to withdraw her support for Health Care Reform. It might help her poll numbers and get her back into good graces with the citizens of Arkansas.

These ag producers need assistance right now, esp. flood proven states like Ark., Mo. Miss. Drought striken areas of Texas also. Please Mr. Reid consider how much investment in equipment, seed, fertilizer, labor; all this money is put out. Employees of companies have their labor only invested. Where is the stimulus package that we were promised?

Mr. Reid must be as sorry as MONSANTO!!! Why don’t all of us FARMERS take just ONE year OFF!!!!! That would Give Washington and the U.S. a wake up call!!!!

I don’t know about any other areas of the country, but Ag is hurting in S.E. Alabama. To spend what we have to spend to make a crop and then lose it to the weather and receive low prices for what we do produce, that is why farmers need help from somewhere. IF the price paid to farmers were to DOUBLE it would change the price in the stores VERY Little if it was passed 100 percent to the consumer. This would create more economic activity in the US than any “Stimulus” or “Jobs” bill ever imagined. Not to mention increased taxes for the local, state and federal government. Agriculture is the LAST great Manufacturer left in the US. Why? because the farmers have not sold out to save $100,000 from a multi billion dollar industry like all the “other” great manufacturing industries.

I wish to praise senator Lincoln,Cochran, and others who understand farming and its levels of cost, investment, return and risk.but this reneging of dissaster assistance is becoming normal for washington such as changing payment amounts, time of payments and risk management agencies rationing of crop insurance payments by using different language of rulings when paying out endemnity payments.we have eough battles to wage in weather, price volidity and rising cost, we don’t need anymore help drowning by the hands of our federal goverment.I sure do not care for them to manage my health insurance.they seem to do better baling out copanies that pay out millions in bonuses, maybe that’s where the big re-election funds come from. Now they know what drives people to fly their plain into the IRS building or have people commit shootings at goverment buildings. Citizens are fed up especially when its there goverment that causing their financial ruin!
