Don’t Relax Yet on Plant Bug Treatments

Although many cotton fields in the Mid-South are approaching cutout, it’s not yet time to back off on plant bug treatments.

Scott Stewart, Tennessee IPM Extension specialist, is reporting a large increase in the number of tarnished plant bugs in cotton, primarily due to a gap in treatments during mid- to late July. “The moral of the story is that your insecticide treatments are not in vain, even when you feel like you are not making progress,” he says.

Stewart reminds growers that it’s important to continue managing insect pests for 15-20 days after cutout. Data has shown that applications for plant bugs after the third week of bloom did not improve yields.
