See You in New Orleans

I hope you are making plans to attend the National Cotton Council’s 2010 Beltwide Cotton Conferences in New Orleans, LA, January 4-7. This conference always features new cotton technologies, informative workshops and presentations offering farming solutions.

I will give my annual general overview on Cotton Incorporated activities during Tuesday morning’s Production Conference General Session, but I urge you to think about obstacles you faced in 2009 and what information you need moving into 2010.

Cotton Incorporated funds a wide range of research across the Cotton Belt through both Core and State Support Program dollars that may help your operation.

Dr. Don Jones will be partnering to showcase USDA’s Cotton Germplasm Collection in our Ag Research booth during the Technical Exhibits. Dr. Jeanne Reeves will hold a Record Keeping Seminar to help growers manage risks and Dr.Ed Barnes is participating in irrigation and precision farming technology-related workshops.

I also encourage you to attend Cotton Incorporated Environmental Scientist Janet Reed’s workshop “Cotton & the Environment – What is Sustainability?” on January 5. Our weed scientist, Dr. Bob Nichols is organizing sessions on Fusarium, Diagnosing Boll Damage and Host Plant Resistance. Please check the final Beltwide schedule and I’ll see you in New Orleans.

Cotton-Based Erosion Control Products

What began as a research initiative to find new uses for cotton gin byproducts has turned into the successful adoption of an erosion-control product now approved in 14 states for use on construction and maintenance ground erosion control.
Developed by Cotton Incorporated and Alabama-based Mulch and Seed Innovations, LLC, the HydraMatriCx Series is a line of high-performance hydraulic erosion control products made from a combination of straw, reclaimed cotton plant material and a blend of performance-enhancing tackifiers and additives.
Aside from gaining nationwide attention on high-profile project sites that range from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport to Volkswagen’s new Chattanooga, TN, facility, the HydraMatriCx Series has caught the eye of some of the most well-known civil engineering and storm-water trade publications in the industry.
