Out of Disasters Come Opportunities

The 2009 China International Cotton Conference was held in the historic city of Nanjing, China, in mid-June with the theme “Meeting the Financial Crisis and Pursuing Sustainable Development for the Chinese and Global Cotton Industries.”

In attendance were 672 key cotton industry leaders from 18 countries.

The conference served as a platform for senior governmental officials, trade organization leaders, exporters from major producing countries, major consuming countries, international organizations and presidents of world-famous cotton companies to have in-depth discussions on how to deal with the financial crisis.

Li Chengyu, President of Council of China Cotton Association (CCA),opened the conference with a presentation entitled “Standing Up to Financial Crisis Hand in Hand While Promoting The Cotton Industry’s Sustainable Development.”

The financial crisis, Li Chengyu said, has tested the economic and ministration capacity of the governments of all countries, the wisdom of human beings and the cotton industry as a whole.

But crisis brings not only disasters but opportunities for China to grow and learn.

After the Cold War, the world economy began its globalization process. Market mechanisms and production modes of industrialization spread to the whole world. Both developed and developing countries have enjoyed the benefits of globalization.

According to Li Chengyu it is necessary to save the market during this difficult time. However, the more important thing is to learn from the experience and study how to build a sounder mechanism and put in place a long-term, forward-looking system design.

There are two old Chinese sayings Li Chengyu cited: One says that “as long as green hills remain, there will never be a shortage of firewood.” The other says that “the fire burns high when everybody adds wood to it.” So long as a united industry holds its ground and makes a concerted effort, he said China can surely achieve its goal.
