Syngenta Continues Pest Patrol Efforts
Cotton growers are always looking for ways to make their operations more efficient and profitable. From seed treatments to premixes to GPS guided planters and sprayers, new technology is becoming more of a necessity than a luxury for those who want to continue to stay ahead of the curve in the increasingly competitive global cotton marketplace.
In keeping with the latest technology, Syngenta has continued its partnership with university entomologists to provide season-long pest updates through a convenient toll free Pest Patrol hotline, (877) 285-8525. Syngenta also has enhanced its Pest Patrol website, www.PestPatrol.com, with several advanced features for the 2010 season. Program participants can now:
- Register for text message alerts when a chosen entomologist posts a new update to the Pest Patrol hotline (877) 285-8525
- Listen to archived audio files for all Pest Patrol updates
- Play the fun, interactive Trap the Pest game and share with friends, family and colleagues
- Find information on the fit of Centric and Endigo insecticides in a sound insect management plan
As consultants and growers prepare for this season, there will be a myriad of to-dos on the list, including developing a plan to protect their cotton fields from yield-robbing insects. The Pest Patrol hotline and enhanced website allows them to tap into the expertise of university entomologists across the Cotton Belt via timely recorded updates concerning field conditions, pest pressures and treatment recommendations. Each recommendation is tailored to the pest complex and current situation in a given local area, allowing growers to customize their insect management plan to fit the needs of their individual situation.
All eight of the entomologists who participated in 2009 have agreed to continue their support in 2010 and one more has joined the Pest Patrol team. They are listed below by region.
Mid-South
B. Rogers Leonard, Ph.D., Louisiana State University Agricultural Center
Jeff Gore, Ph.D., Mississippi State University
Gus Lorenz, Ph. D., University of Arkansas
Southeast
Jeremy Greene, Ph.D., Clemson University
Ames Herbert, Ph. D., Virginia Tech University
Jack Bacheler, Ph. D., N.C. State University – new for 2010
Southwest
David Kerns, Ph.D., Texas A&M University
Clyde Crumley, Texas A&M University
Chris Sansone, Ph.D., Texas A&M University
Participating entomologist Rogers Leonard of the Louisiana State University AgCenter expressed his enthusiasm for the program and the value it brings to the cotton industry. “The Pest Patrol hotline delivers very timely information to producers and agricultural consultants so they can make much more informed decisions with regard to their farm and, in the case of consultants, their clients’ farms across the region,” he said. “It is another avenue to disseminate information, which is directly related to our jobs as extension and research scientists across the South. This is especially important to those producers and consultants that may not have access to timely information. We hope that our reports contain near-real time information on regional problems that can be used to generate a recommendation on how best to manage specific pests.”
