The June 1 USDA Crop Progress report showed exactly how much progress cotton growers across the Belt have made in getting planting back on schedule.
The report showed that 64% of the U.S. cotton crop has now been planted – up 15% from a week ago. That puts the national total right at the 5-year average for the end of May.
In all, 10 cotton producing states are now showing planting progress ahead of their respective 5-year averages, with the biggest weekly increases coming in Kansas (up 27%), Virginia (up 25%), Tennessee (up 22%), and Alabama and Arkansas (both up 21%).
The initial report on cotton squaring shows visible squares in Arizona, Texas, Tennessee and Georgia.
The first cotton condition report of the season shows 43% of the U.S. crop rated good/excellent, 38% fair, and 19% poor/very poor.
