Hancock (Finally!) Receives 2019 Cotton Achievement Award

No question that this year has presented its share of challenges. For us at Cotton Grower, it turned something as simple as presenting an award into a long, winding marathon.

When COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the Texas Gin Show in Lubbock in April, it also cancelled the opportunity to appropriately honor our 2019 Cotton Grower Cotton Achievement Award winner Dahlen Hancock. Yet finally, on July 10, Cotton Grower Business Director Beck Barnes was able to visit Hancock’s New Home, TX farm for a long overdue (and socially distanced) presentation.

“This is the first time that we have not been able to have an award luncheon to present this award,” said Barnes. “But we didn’t want to let a year pass without getting this in your hands. Cotton Grower gives this award, but we couldn’t do it without sponsorship from Americot and their NexGen seed, and we don’t give it on behalf of ourselves. We give it on behalf of the cotton industry – from all of your farming peers and from all of the associations you work with. Thank you for all of your service on behalf of our industry.”

In accepting the award, Hancock said, “I appreciate the honor. Years ago, I remember telling Steve Verett that I didn’t know how I could help the industry, but that I’d like to try. That’s how it started. And along the way, it kind of evolved.

“I do appreciate the award,” he added. “And while I can think of a lot of mentors who I look up to in my life, it’s very much an honor to be thought of in the same class as some of them.”
