Pakistani Association Averts Strike, Looks for Resolution

The All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) called off the indefinite countrywide strike that it had proposed for March 18 after Punjab Governor Salman Taseer assured the group that a government committee would listen to APTMA’s demands.

APTMA had organized the strike to protest what it believes are “anti-spinner” policies being adopted by the federal ministry of textiles. In particular, APTMA is against the government’s recent move to slash the cotton yarn export quota to 35 million kilograms of yarn a month from 50 million kilograms.

According to a report in The Nation, Governor Taseer visited the APTMA office last week and announced that a meeting of all stakeholders, including APTMA members, would be held with the President and Prime Minister of Pakistan.
The report added that “the Governor said that he has discussed the issue with Federal Textile Minister Rana Farooq and he would work to resolve the issue within a shortest possible time.”

In response, APTMA chairman Ejaz Gohar called for a resolution to the situation within 14 days.
