Punjab province:

-Acreage remained less in both pre-season and season crops. Growers went for alternate food crops in order to get better returns. This trend may continue if the sowing of cotton remains less viable for growers in the next season.

– Germination remained poor in both pre-season and season crop.

– Crop size of pre-season crop is not more that 50%. The effect of this size has already been observed in the last PCGA report.

– Weather conditions did not remain ideal in June, July, and August although they have now taken a turn for the better.

– Pest pressure remained low but curl leaf virus pressure is higher.

– Crop losses due to floods are higher.

– We are expecting about one million bales less.

Conclusion:

-Sindh is likely to offset expected shortfall in Punjab.

-Private estimates for 2013/14 Pakistani cotton crop size are ranging between 12 and 13 million bales.

-The crop estimate of 12.6 million bales given by the crop assessment committee seems more realistic at present.

– Domestic mill consumption is expected to remain at around 15 million bales therefore Pakistan may have a deficit of approximately 2.5 million bales bales.
