Cotton crop condition took a slide in the past week, according to USDA’s Crop Progress report for the week ending September 5.
The report shows that 61% of the U.S. cotton crop is now rated good/excellent, compared to 70% one week ago. Cotton rated fair climbed to 32% for the week – up 8 percentage points from last week. Cotton rated poor/very poor stood at 7% in this week’s report.
Boll set is now reported in 94% of the U.S. crop – up 8 percentage points in the past week and only 3 percentage points behind the 5-year average for the date. Largest increases were seen in Oklahoma and Texas.
Open bolls are now seen in 29% of the crop – up 8 percentage points in the past week and 5 points off the 5-year average. Four states – Arizona, California, Kansas, and Mississippi – remain ahead of their respective averages.
