Crop Progress: First Harvest Reports In

The USDA Crop Progress report for the week ending Sept. 10 turns an eye toward the end of the season with the first harvest report for the year.

This week, the report shows that 8% of the U.S. cotton crop has already been harvested, thanks mostly to Texas (19%) and Arizona (11%), with smaller percentages in Louisiana and Tennessee.

Boll set is reported at 98%, with open bolls now present in 43% of the crop – up 11 percentage points in the past week, putting the crop slightly ahead of the 5-year average for this week.

In terms of crop condition, 29% of the U.S. crop is rated good/excellent, 30% fair, 23% poor, and 18% very poor.
