Crop Progress: Harvest Kicks Off in More States

According to the USDA Crop Progress report for the week ending Sept. 25, cotton growers in Kansas and Missouri have joined 10 other states with harvest activity. Across the Cotton Belt, 15% of the U.S. crop has now been harvested – up 4 percentage points in the past week and slightly ahead of the 5-year average for the date.

Open bolls are now reported in 67% of the crop – up 8 points from last week and 5 points ahead of average. Biggest percentage increases came from Alabama, California, Georgia, North Carolina, Mississippi, and South Carolina. In all, 10 states are ahead of average for the date.

The crop condition numbers for the week show 31% of the U.S. crop is rated good/excellent, 27% fair, and 42% poor/very poor.
