Crop Progress: Overall, Looking Good!

USDA’s Crop Progress report for the week ending June 5 shows that 84% of the U.S. cotton crop is now in the ground – up an impressive 16 percentage points in the past week and 8 percentage points ahead of the 5-year average for this week.

In all, 13 cotton producing states are currently ahead of their respective 5-year averages for planting, with 10 states showing planting rates above 90%.

Squaring is now reported in 11% of the U.S. crop – up 4 percentage points in the past week and just ahead of the 5-year average for this week.

Cotton condition improved slightly over the past week, with 48% of the crop rated good/excellent, 37% rated fair, and 15% rated poor/very poor.

To compare: corn 94% planted, soybeans 78% planted, peanuts 88% planted, sorghum 56% planted, and rice 89% emerged.
