Crop Progress: Season End in Sight

As November begins, so do the last few weeks of the USDA Crop Progress report for 2022. We’re down to two weekly recaps for cotton this week – boll opening and harvest. Here’s what USDA had to say for the week ending Oct. 30.

Open bolls are now reported in 96% of the U.S. crop – up 4 percentage points in the past week and still slightly ahead of the 5-year average for the date. All 15 cotton-producing states remain ahead of their respective averages for open bolls.

Harvest is now complete across 55% of the U.S. cotton acres. That’s up 10 percentage points in the past week and a (whopping) 8 points ahead of the 5-year average. Again, all states are ahead of average for harvest, with the biggest percentage increases in the past week coming in South Carolina, North Carolina, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Missouri.
