Crop Progress: 2022 Cotton Planting Begins

It’s way early in the season, but not for cotton growers in Arizona, California, and south Texas. And as USDA’s weekly Crop Progress reports begin for 2022, it’s evident that progress is quickly being made in these early planting geographies.

The Crop Progress report for the week ending April 10 shows that 7% of the U.S. cotton crop has now been planted – right on the 5-year average for this date.

The numbers show that Texas is 12% planted, which matches the state’s 5-year average for early April. Arizona is 17% planted – 14% behind its 5-year average. But that’s offset a bit by California, which is already 35% planted versus its 5-year average of only 6%.

Louisiana growers are also getting started, with 1% of their 2022 acres planted.
