USDA Crop Progress: First Squaring Reported for 2023

The USDA Crop Progress report for the week ending May 28 shows that 60% of the U.S. cotton crop is now planted – up 15 percentage points in the past week. Twelve of the 15 cotton producing states showed double digit increases in planting percentage, led by North Carolina and Tennessee with 23 percentage point jumps. Individual state plantings currently range from 95% in California to 32% in Oklahoma.

Overall, planting lags the 5-year average for the date by 2 percentage points, while 8 states are currently at or ahead of their respective planting averages.

Squaring is now reported in 3% of the total crop – 3 percentage points behind the 5-year average.

The first crop condition report for the season shows that 48% of the U.S. cotton crop is rated good/excellent, 39% fair, and 13% poor.
