Tanzania to Triple Cotton Output through Introduction of Bt

The Tanzania Cotton Board has announced that the country’s cotton production could triple due to several major developments: the introduction of genetically modified cotton, the use of contract farming, and increased financing to growers. Production as a result of those efforts is expected to increase from 90,000 metric tons this season to as much as 260,000 tons by 2014-15. That’s still more than double the production of 123,000 tons achieved in 2008-09, a total that decreased 25 percent in the current season due to lower cotton prices.

Trials regarding the use of Bt cotton are ready to begin at any time, with the legal framework having already been put into place, according to an August 16 story posted on Bloomberg.com. To help on the financing side, commercial banks are offering growers loans for contract farming and the government is in the process of establishing an agriculture-specific bank. There are approximately 500,000 Tanaznian farmers cultivating cotton on 485,000 hectares of cropland.

Hi editor,
If Tanzania Cotton Board decide to do that it will be very fine but as far as I understand TCB works in political way more than in reality.
Tanzania has very big land suitable for cotton and also has a lot of cotton glowers than any country in Africa but what they produce is less than Burkinafaso which is very small compared to Tanzania.
TCB they sleeping as if they don’t know what is going on in the planet, they do have a lot of polical project but no one is working on seeds which are used for next crops,
You can’t believe at Tanzania we use this year seeds for next crop without doing any research to increase yield per acre.

Ok let us wait and see that 2014 since it is very neer.

Tanzania has great potential to increase the cotton production. Most of the cotton grown is hand sown and hand harvested. It is extremly happy to note that it is inching towards Bt cotton adaptation. Although policy framework is yet to get shape, there is willingness in the policy makers to accept the good technology. Tazania should adapt hybrid technology along with Bt technology, which will help to increase the cotton production and also protect the technology. India is cultivating Hybrid Bt cotton and it has succefully doubled the production. It is likely that the production is going to increase withthe introduction of new technologies. So Tanzania go for Hybrids with Bt technology

BT cotton is in all likelyhood necessary to increase yields in many parts of Africa. The framework for it’s introduction is complex and Countries must review very carefully how it will be implemented.

My perception is that there is much talk on this subject presently. Whether the action matches the talk I am not aware. Forums such as ICAC can help establish policies in this regard.

However as Bill Gates made clear the introduction of GM seed in Africa will automatically increase yields and with current cotton prices unlikely to return in a hurry to the lower levels faced over the last decade we clearly have an opportunity to break the cycle of poverty experienced by rural farmers in Africa.

This is an issue which needs to be brought more to the fore ,as well as ensuring at the same time that the input providers whether government or the private sector are given a more secure system of protection to ensure continued growth and enthusiasm for a country’s cotton economy.

Dear Sir’s,
I am totaly agree with Dr. V.N. kulkarni, that if India can make differnace in Cotton Industry by producing Bt Cotton then anyone can may creat a magic. Only thing is that you will have to cahnge your view or way of looking at things. If we are the official government body then you should follow the things as it is followed by others.
