Bayer Adds TwinLink Plus Pest Protection for 2017

Worm pressure presents a constant threat to cotton production. But growers get a pest protection upgrade in 2017 when TwinLink Plus is added to their cottonseed trait package choices.

With three distinct modes of action, TwinLink Plus cotton technology provides season-long Bt protection against worm pests and upgrades a grower’s resistance management program.

TwinLink Plus technology combines two Bayer proprietary Bt genes – Cry1Ab and Cry2Ae, both included in TwinLink – with the Vip3Aa19 Bt gene for effective management of major lepidopteran pests such as cotton bollworm and armyworm, including fall armyworm.

“TwinLink Plus offers three modes of action for greater technology sustainability and improved insect resistance management,” says Bayer Cotton Trait Manager Ben Von Kanel. “The enhanced activity of TwinLink Plus against bollworm and armyworm decreases the likelihood growers will need to make supplemental applications to control worm pests, which helps manage input costs and cotton growers’ bottom line.”

Bayer already delivers exceptional cottonseed varieties through its flagship brands Stoneville and FiberMax. TwinLink Plus will be available as part of the GlyTol LibertyLink TwinLink Plus (GLTP) trait package. GLTP gives cotton growers flexible weed control options, because they can use Liberty herbicide or glyphosate for over-the-top, broad-spectrum herbicide applications. The trait package also gives growers the ability to rotate herbicide modes of action to control weeds effectively and reduce the potential for weed resistance.

In 2015 and 2016, Bayer sponsored more than 200 variety trials across the Cotton Belt. These Agronomic Performance Trials (APT) allow growers and consultants to evaluate the local performance of Bayer commercial and experimental cottonseed and cotton technologies, including TwinLink Plus, across multiple regions, soil types, irrigation regimes and farm management practices. Early results from these trials indicate high yield potential and outstanding fiber quality for the new TwinLink Plus varieties, which are anticipated to be released in January 2017.
