Brazil’s Crop to Jump 28% in Coming Season

Cotton prices have been relatively high leading into the coming season – high enough to lead Brazilian producers to dedicate much more land to cotton cultivation than they did last year. Total acreage could reach almost 1.1 million hectares in 2013/14, a jump of more than 20% year-over-year.

The overall crop is expected to be between 22% and 28% higher than the 1.3 million tons harvested last year, reaching a projected total of about 1.7 million tons. The majority of the those gains will be seen in Brazil’s midwestern region, especially in Mato Grosso and Goias.

Higher prices – supplemented by more favorable currency exchange rates – are leading the recovery for Brazil’s cotton production, which was down last year by almost 32% over the banner year growers produced during the 2011/12 season.
