The International Cotton Association (ICA) has recently implemented changes to its arbitration system. In a recent email to its members, ICA detailed the changes listed below.

Led by the Arbitration Strategy Committee and approved by the Board of Directors, the following changes have been introduced. The changes form part of ICA’s strategy work and have been reflected in the new version of the ICA Bylaws and Rules.

•  Deposits:  Due to the increase in requests for further deposits in order to release an arbitration award, the deposit rate requested from both parties at the beginning of the arbitration process was increased from £3,000 to £4,000 each. This amount will be reviewed regularly and any changes will be communicated to you.

• Timesheets:  A new timesheet has been developed for use by all ICA Arbitrators. Designed to provide a detailed breakdown of the costs incurred during an arbitration, the timesheet will enable parties to see the makeup of their costs. Timesheets must be completed for all arbitrations with immediate effect.

• Tribunal ‘conference call’ requests:  We are now receiving a high number of requests to host Tribunal conference calls. Due to the increased workload at the ICA and the impact on staff resources, we are no longer able to offer this service. The system we use is Skype and it is readily available and easy to set up.  If you need any help or advice on how to install this on your computer then please contact us.

If you have any queries or require further information about the changes, please do not hesitate to contact us.
