Indian Technical Textiles Sector to Reach $36 Billion

Indian officials estimate that the Indian technical textiles sector will reach $36 billion by 2016-17 due to an annual estimated growth of about 20 percent. The technical textiles sector has been a focus of the government recently, as evidenced by the creation of new Centers of Excellence and market research and support programs geared to the technical textiles industry.

On July 26, Sujit Gulati, India’s joint secretary of the Ministry of Textiles, attended a one-day technical textiles conference in Coimbatore, jointly organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry and the Ministry of Textiles. While there, he emphasized the need for inter-ministerial coordination – involving Textiles, Health and Highways – to grow the nascent technical textiles sector. During the same conference, Anil Joshi, Textiles Commissioner of India, emphasized the need for implementing technical textiles to improve the nation’s hygiene and medical sectors.

Govindhan Ramakrishnan, a professor of textiles and a delegate who attended the conference, insisted that market awareness and the knowledge of converted products are essential for the growth of the technical textiles sector in India. India offers enormous opportunities for collaborators to conduct knowledge-enriching workshops to boost the technical textiles sector.

In December 2011, Texas Tech University and Coimbatore-based Kumaraguru College of Technology will jointly host an international conference on technical textiles, ATNT-2011. For more information, please visit www.atnt2011.com.
