Crop Progress: Great Cotton Condition as Harvest Increases

After a Columbus Day hiatus, USDA issued its Crop Progress report for the week ending Oct. 10. And when it comes to cotton, one thing is clear: this crop, overall, is in great shape as more and more pickers head to the field.

Cotton condition for the week shows 64% of the U.S. crop rated good/excellent – up 2 percentage points from a week ago. The report shows that 30% of crop is rated fair and 6% poor/very poor.

Open bolls are now reported in 78% of the U.S. crop – up 8 percentage points and now only 4 percentage points behind the 5-year average for the week. Eight states are currently at or ahead of their respective averages.

Harvest showed a 7-point jump in the past week, as 20% of the U.S. is now harvested. It’s still 6 percentage points off the 5-year average as harvest is beginning in earnest in many parts of the Cotton Belt. All 15 cotton producing states now show harvest activity, with Louisiana, Arkansas, and California posting the highest percentage gains in the past week.
