Crop Progress: Cotton Planting Now Reported from Coast to Coast

It’s still early, but cotton planting is officially off to a big start across the Cotton Belt.

According to USDA’s Crop Progress report for the week ending May 1, 16% of the U.S. cotton crop has been planting – up four percentage points in the past week and one percentage point ahead of the 5-year average for this date. Planting is now reported in 14 of the 15 cotton-producing states, with eight states (AZ, AR, CA, KS, LA, NC, TX, and VA) currently ahead of their respective 5-year averages.

State percentages of planting currently range from 3% (KS and TN) up to 95% (CA).
