Crop Progress: Cotton Planting Right on Schedule

Despite cool, wet weather in parts of the Cotton Belt, growers made impressive progress during the past week in this year’s cotton planting. According to the USDA Crop Progress report for the week ending May 7, 22% of the U.S. cotton crop has now been planted – up 7 percentage points in the past seven days.

That’s just one percentage point behind the 5-year average for this date.

Planting is reported in all cotton-producing states this week, with several states showing double-digit progress, led by Missouri (up 35 percentage points), Louisiana (up 23 points), Arkansas and Mississippi (both up 21 points), and Arizona (up 20 points). In all, nine states are currently on or ahead of their respective 5-year averages.
