Growers familiar with CROPLAN corn and soybean varieties in the South may want to keep their eyes on the company’s cotton program, too.

Over the past several years, CROPLAN has been quietly rebuilding its profile in the cotton market, according to Robert Cossar, cotton product manager for WinField, which owns the CROPLAN brand.

“We’ve taken a renewed interest in our cotton business in the past few years, now that we have more people and cotton experts in the South,” he explained. “We want to make sure we position our cotton varieties on the right acre with the right growers.

The company’s top variety for 2015 is CROPLAN 3787B2RF, a true mid-to-full season variety that has emerged as a top performer on both irrigated and dryland acres in lower Southern geographies from Georgia to South Texas. “It has yielded as well as some of the top varieties on the market,” said Cossar, “but has also delivered an average staple of 37, which provides a premium that some other varieties may not deliver.”

Three other varieties – all targeted for Texas – make up the core of the company’s lineup for 2015.

CROPLAN 3006B2RF, an early determinate variety, fits irrigated acres in the High Plains area north of Amarillo. CROPLAN 3156B2RF is an early/mid variety for the High Plains that has performed well under irrigation or on dryland acres. And, CROPLAN 3035RF – another early/mid variety – has been a solid performer in areas where the Roundup Flex program still fits.

The company also has two new Bollgard II XtendFlex varieties in the wings, awaiting final technology approvals. “We believe that as we move into these newer traits, we’re in a good position,” added Cossar.
